Want more JOY and LAUGHTER in your life?
Laughter Yoga was founded by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian medical doctor in 1995. What started out with just 5 participants in Mumbai rapidly spread to Laughter Clubs being started in 110 countries. It’s never been a secret that laughing and laughter is good for us……..we know it makes us happy….we can feel it. Over the years many scientists have explored the effect laughing has on our body, mind and general wellbeing. Clinical research conducted in India, UK and the US has proven that laughter lowers blood pressure and stress hormones (Epinephrine & Cortisol). Prof Robin Dunbar from the Univeristy of Oxford, UK and his team concluded after much research and experimental studies that laughter significantly increases endorphin release, making it a valuable method of pain relief (increases pain threshold) and that laughter through an endorphin-mediated opiate effect plays a vital role in social bonding…….and the studies continue.
What is Laughter Yoga?
Laughter Yoga encourages laughter without the need of jokes, comedy or humour. The focus is on bringing forward our inner child and embracing the playfulness within us which can change simulated laughter into real, joyous and contagious laughter. Did you know that unlike our brains, our body can’t distinguish between pretend and real laughter if we commit to practicing with energy and willingness? The physiological and psychological benefits are similar in both types of laughter.
It is called Laughter Yoga because it combines Laughter exercises with yoga breathing. There is also movement which takes into consideration the needs and ability of the group/individual.
